Multiple Grammy-nominated and -winning trombonist, composer, and arranger Alan Ferber has been described as “one of the jazz world’s premier composers and arrangers for larger groups” by All About Jazz. He won DownBeat’s Critics Poll for “Rising Star-Trombone” in 2022 and received New Jazz Works grants from Chamber Music America in 2013 and 2023.
Ferber’s recordings include the Grammy-nominated Jigsaw (2017), Roots & Transitions (2016), for which his composition “Flow” received a Grammy nomination, and March Sublime (2013), also Grammy-nominated. His latest release is Alan Ferber Nonet: Up High, Down Low (2023). He has performed and recorded with ensembles including Esperanza Spalding’s Radio Music Society, Dr. Lonnie Smith Octet, the Ted Nash Big Band, and Miguel Zenón’s Identities Big Band, and with artists such as Peter Gabriel, Paul Simon, Sufjan Stevens, The National, Dr. Dre, Harry Connick Jr., and Beirut, among others. His discography includes over 150 recordings.
As a composer and arranger, Ferber has written music for the video game Valorant, and arranged music for Sara Gazarek’s Grammy-nominated Thirsty Ghost, Shoshana Bean’s Spectrum, and Joni Mitchell’s works for the Brussels Jazz Orchestra’s We Have A Dream, among many others.
Ferber serves as Associate Director of the BMI Jazz Composers Workshop and teaches at NYU Steinhardt School and Montclair State University.
