The New York Times Previews "The Hunt," Kate Soper's new chamber opera
“The Hunt,” set to premiere this month in New York, mines ancient lore about unicorns, but asks questions of today. Who has power, and who has rights?"
In advance of the world premiere of Kate Soper's new chamber opera The Hunt, commissioned by Miller Theatre, The New York Times' critic Seth Colter Walls attended a rehearsal and spoke with Soper, director Ashley Kelly Tata, and soprano Christiana Cole about the composer's new work.
“She consistently borrows ancient literary texts and tropes — freely quoting from and playing with, say, Aristotle or Christine de Pizan — in dramatic works that have contemporary urgency and comic thrust.”
The feature includes photos of scenes from summer rehearsals on the Miller stage, and references past operas by Soper. It also highlights Soper's writing prowess, while focusing on the opera's theme.
