Mario Davidovsky was born in 1934 in Medanos, Buenos Aires, Argentina. His early composition studies were with Guillermo Graetzer and culminated with his graduation from the University of Buenos Aires. In 1958, Davidovsky came to the United States with a specific interest in electronic music: to participate in the Berkshire Music Festival at Tanglewood. At Tanglewood he worked with Aaron Copland and with Milton Babbitt, from whom he learned of the forthcoming Columbia-Princeton Electronic Music Center, which he was later to direct. Davidovsky is widely recognized for his contributions in the realm of electro-acoustic music. His Synchronism No. 6 for piano and tape won the Pulitzer Prize in 1971. He has received many other honors, including two Guggenheim Fellowships and two Rockefeller Fellowships. He has served on the faculty at the Manhattan School of Music, Yale University, Columbia University, and Harvard University. Davidovsky has also composed numerous acoustic works, including his recent Concertino for violin and orchestra for the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra.
